            Executive summary

When art, architecture and landscape architecture work together meaningfully, the collaboration can create a significant new building project. The art of the eight artists discussed in this plan readily came to mind when considering the mission of The Salvation Army and its Surry Hills site. The intention had always been to select one, two or three artists to commission to play an important part in transforming Campbell Street. Feedback from The Salvation Army soon after the first version of this plan was drafted was to proceed with artists Vivienne Binns, Nici Cumpston and Nell. That decision is explained below. With a preferred direction now clear, we could have omitted the discussion of the eight artists who were our starting point. But these artists make for such an interesting group and conversation that we have left that section in, and hope that our thought and decision-making process might be as interesting to readers of this plan as it was to us.
