City of Sydney — Open Gallery

Downloads Open Gallery retrospective 2006–08

Lining the City’s streets, these bold art works in banner form, by leading Australian and international artists, create a stunning cumulative effect. Works from artists based in New York, Tokyo, Sydney, Melbourne and Irrunytju (Northern Territory) create a lively series of connections and exchanges across oceans, generations and approaches to art. Inspirations for the images include Emily Dickinson poems, Aboriginal stories, medieval machines and the humble milk bar.
Curator Barbara Flynn said, ‘The digital images from which the banners are printed have made communication across diverse cultures and national lines effortless and immediate. Through the pairings of artworks that comprise the show we are reminded that community is possible – that through art and artists, the world we inhabit can be a more inspiring and harmonious place than anyone would believe while watching the evening news.’
The extension of Open Gallery along William and Oxford streets and into Kings Cross and Darlinghurst marks the rejuvenation of these cultural arteries through major capital upgrade works. For Sydney artist Martin Sharp, this forms a full circle. His portrait of actor David Gulpilil will be displayed on Darlinghurst Rd, Kings Cross, just around the corner from where he co-founded the famous Yellow House in the 1960s.
